The city's subways and buses are operated by New York City Transit (NYCT), a division of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), a state agency. The MTA also operates the regional commuter lines the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad.
The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) maintains city streets and sidewalks, bus lanes and bus shelters, and implements street design changes. NYC DOT also operates the Staten Island Ferry.
The NYC Ferry network is owned by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC) and is privately operated. The public bicycle sharing system Citi Bike is privately owned and operated.
