Jewish Studies: Antisemitism

The Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism (SEAS) advances U.S. foreign policy on antisemitism. Antisemitism is discrimination, prejudice, or hatred toward Jews. The Special Envoy develops and implements policies and projects to support efforts to combat antisemitism. Deborah E. Lipstadt was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 30, 2022 as the Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism, with the rank of Ambassador.

In 2024, the United States and 35 other states and international bodies endorsed the Global Guidelines for Countering Antisemitism.

The Columbia Task Force on Antisemitism was created in Fall of 2023 by Columbia University President Minouche Shafik, Barnard College President Laura Ann Rosenbury, and Teachers College President Thomas R. Bailey to address the harmful impact of rising antisemitism on Columbia’s Jewish community and to ensure that protection, respect, and belonging extends to everyone.

The Association for Jewish Studies, the largest learned society and professional
organization representing Jewish studies scholars worldwide, assembled a task force
to study the topic of antisemitism and academic freedom in the spring of 2021. The
work of the task force was to determine if and how the AJS could shed light on the
challenges of responding to rising antisemitic incidents in the context of universities’
commitment to academic freedom.

The Journal of Contemporary Antisemitism (JCA) focuses on the multiple and changing manifestations of antisemitism in the contemporary world. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, secular and religious antisemitism, antisemitism on the left and the right of the political spectrum, and antizionism.

Eric K. Ward is the Executive Director of the Western States Center, and has spent many years focusing on and combating white supremacy. In this essential article, he writes about the deep-seated nature of antisemitism as the core of white supremacy and argues that in order to fight white supremacy, combating antisemitism must be included on the agenda.

In 2020, the Southern Poverty Law Center added antisemitism to its ideology list, citing Eric Ward's Skin in the Game (cited here) and noting that it "which permeates most of the movements our researchers monitor."

The Department of State has used a working definition, along with examples, of anti-Semitism since 2010. On May 26, 2016, the 31 member states of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), of which the United States is a member, adopted a non-legally binding “working definition” of anti-Semitism at its plenary in Bucharest. This definition is consistent with and builds upon the information contained in the 2010 State Department definition. As a member of IHRA, the United States now uses this working definition and has encouraged other governments and international organizations to use it as well.
