Jewish Studies: Basic Resources for Jewish Studies

Guide to doing research in various fields of Jewish Studies

Basic Resources

This page details the most important resources applicable to nearly all aspects of Jewish Studies.  The most important resources for accessing books, articles, and other sources are described below:

Using books in Hathi Trust:

During the COVID-19 pandemic, some books in our catalog are available digitally via the Hathi Trust Digital Library.  Upon clicking a link in CLIO to the book, you will be prompted to log in via your uni and password.

Once you've logged in, you'll come to a page that looks like this.  Scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Temporary Access."

If you receive an error that says "this item is not available online," check the top of the page - you may have to log in! Click the yellow Log in button and choose Columbia University. You'll then be prompted for your uni and password. Once entered, you will see "Member" listed on the top right side of the page. But you still can't access the book!  That's because you haven't checked it out.  The Hathi Trust Library is like a physical library, in that one person is allowed to use a book at a time. Click on the "Check Out" button on the right side of the page, and the book will then be checked out to you for a limited amount of time. Note that the checkout time might expire, and then you'll need to click "check out" again to see the book.
