Welcome to Starr Library!
Our Library offers a wide range of research, instruction, and borrowing services to support all levels of academic research. This basic guide identifies some of the major resources and library services that support research in East Asian Studies at Columbia University, with a focus on western language resources. For more detailed information about relevant print and electronic resources, please consult CLIO, the library catalog, and contact an area specialist librarian if you have any questions. Keep in mind that this guide is meant only as a starting point. The resources listed are by no means exhaustive, but only a minute selection from all the resources available.
For information about Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Tibetan Studies in the original languages, please consult the relevant research guide from the list below.
Hours and Spaces
Please note that at present, the C.V. Starr East Asian Library is closed for necessary building upgrades. We hope to reopen with the Spring semester 2024.
Our hours are listed daily on our website in the grey sidebar. With just one click you can also see the full schedule for a whole month. The regular hours are updated regularly, and exceptions are updated as they occur.
Our primary study space is the main reading room at the entry level of the library (3rd floor or 300-level of Kent Hall). In addition there are a modest number of carrels and tables throughout our stacks. Special collections, including rare books, archival material, ephemera, and much more can be used by appointment only in our special collections reading room, accessible from the 200-level of the stacks.
