    Covers writings about the history and culture of United States and Canada from prehistory through the recent past. Provides brief summaries of journal articles and book articles, as well as listings for book reviews, media reviews, and dissertations. Also provides links to full text for many journal articles.

    ► If your historical research extends beyond the United States and Canada, you may want to search America History and Life simultaneously with Historical Abstracts, which is international in scope. To do this, select the "Choose Databases" link to the right of America History and Life in your Search Screen.

    Coverage: items published 1954 onwards
    Covers the history of the world from 1450 to the present (excluding the United States and Canada), as represented in more than 2,000 journals published throughout the world. Provides listings for journal articles, book articles, books, and dissertations, along with full text for many articles.

    Provides access to over 13,000 current news sources from around the world. More than 7,900 of these sources are from the US. Coverage varies by title, extending back as far as 1989 for many titles. Includes 230 new full color PDF image editions, for titles such as The New York Post, Newark Star-Ledger, San Francisco Chronicle, London Times, Jerusalem Post, and many more.  For the select titles available in image editions, each day’s edition feeds into the database in full color, with all the pictures, ads, graphs, etc. Select "A-Z Source List" to browse titles and date ranges; and to choose from available online formats.

    "Showcases unique, independent voices from many respected and cited grassroots newspapers, magazines, and journals. The database features over 670,000 articles from around 200 publications, offering a wide range of unfettered, critical coverage of the news."  Most of the items here are presented in full text.

  • ATLA Religion Database with ATLASerials
    "Combines the premier index to journal articles, book reviews, and collections of essays in all fields of religion with ATLA's online collection of major religion and theology journals. . . Coverage in this database begins in 1949 although indexing for some journal titles extends back into the nineteenth century. In ATLASerials, full text is provided for more than 380,000 electronic articles and book reviews from more than 220 journals selected by leading religion scholars in the United States."

    This database is a subset of Access world news. It's contents have been derived by running an algorithm designed to identify articles related to Black life in America from that more general database.

The current file is  "updated daily with new content.  Many of the titles are not found in any other aggregated resource"; and 2.) the historical file, which covers "the years 1959-1989, [and] offers a rare collection of over 30 full-text titles, focusing on African American, Hispanic American, and Native American presses from 1959-1989."

Journals in JSTOR are covered back to their first issues. Recency of coverage varies by title. Some titles are covered up through latest issue; others only up through five years ago, etc.
     
  • MEDLINE   (Ovid Technologies)
    "Ovid MEDLINE ® covers the international literature on biomedicine, including the allied health fields and the biological and physical sciences, humanities, and information science as they relate to medicine and health care. Information is indexed from approximately 5,600 journals published world-wide. . . . Ovid MEDLINE ® is produced by the National Library of Medicine." Includes daily updates. If you select the first two modules from menu:  "Ovid MEDLINE(R) 1946 to January Week 4 2017 and Ovid MEDLINE(R) In-Process & Other Non-Indexed Citations," you will be able to search records back as far as publication year 1860.

  • PAIS International & PAIS Archive
    The "PAIS International" database contains references to journal articles, books, government documents, statistical directories, grey literature, research reports, conference reports, publications of international agencies, microfiche, Internet material, and more.  It includes publications from over 120 countries throughout the world. The "PAIS Archive" database (which is searched simultaneously with "PAIS International")  comprises a retrospective conversion of the "PAIS Annual Cumulated Bulletin," volumes 1-62, published 1915-1976. The "PAIS Archive" database contains references to monographs, periodical articles, notes and announcements, and analytics. Since its establishment in 1914, PAIS (Public Affairs Information Service) has chronicled public and social policy issues in the public debate through highly selective coverage of a wide variety of sources.
