Open Access Week at Columbia

In celebration of Open Access Week 2023, Columbia University Libraries will host the following events:

Data Manipulation using Columbia’s Academic Commons API & OpenRefine

Tuesday October 17, 2023 from 2:00 - 4:00pm EST (Butler Library Room 208B)

You don’t have to know how to use the command line to effectively use data from APIs! Join staff from the Digital Scholarship unit and explore data harvesting and manipulation using the API of Columbia’s institutional repository, Academic Commons, and OpenRefine. In the first half session (2-3pm), attendees will receive a brief overview of repositories, learn general strategies for how to leverage open APIs to answer scholarly questions. And in the second half session (3-4pm), attendees will get an introduction to working with JSON files in OpenRefine.

This workshop is beginner-friendly; attendees should be comfortable using spreadsheet programs, such as Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, etc.

Please download and install OpenRefine prior to the workshop, or come a few minutes early if you have problems with installation.

There is a parallel session for R/Python users in another week (Oct. 24). Even if you are not interested in data manipulation, you are very welcome to join us in either week during 2-3pm and get to know Columbia’s open access academic repository (Academic Commons)!
