Missionary Research Library Archives (at the Burke Library at Union Theological Seminary): Digital Content

Select pamphlets from the Missionary Research Library (MRL) founded in 1914 by John R. Mott in connection with the Foreign Missions Conference of North America. In 1929 the Library was housed in the Brown Memorial Tower of Union Theological Seminary, its Board of Trustees composed of Foreign Missions Conference of North America and Union Theological Seminary members. In 1967, its unique collections, heritage of Ecumenical Protestantism, were transferred into the care of the Union Theological Seminary Library. These pamphlets have been digitized and are now freely accessible on the Internet Archive.

Explore the travels of Gustavus Elmer Emmanuel Lindquist (1886-1967) through the vast array of photographs from the collection. Lindquist spent thirty-four years serving with the Home Missions Council of the Federal Council of Churches. In addition, for twenty-six years he received an additional stipend as the Missionary-at-Large for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel among Indians and Others in North America. The Images in the Lindquist Native American Photographs Collection date from 1909 to 1953, and are drawn from at least thirty-four States, as well as Mexico and Canada. consisting of individual and group portraits, landscapes, buildings (private residences, churches, parsonages, schools, and government structures), agricultural and industrial scenes, cemeteries, parades and pageants, leisure activities, weather events, modes of transportation, and living conditions across a variety of Native communities.

In 1928, library director Charles H. Fahs introduced the Occasional Bulletin to the Missionary Research Library. Fahs produced the bulletin as a bimonthly or quarterly publication to report collection acquisitions and to present reports, data, etc. However, the Great Depression impacted the publication of the bulletin. Once Dr. R Pierce Beaver began his position as director of the Missionary Research Library in 1948, he revived The Occasional Bulletin in 1950.

In 1977 the name of the Occasional Bulletin changed to Occasional Bulletin Missionary Research, then to the International Bulletin of Missionary Research in 1981.
