The Census of Agriculture is the primary data source for statistics related to agricultural activities in the United States. No agricultural data was gathered during the early years of the census, 1790-1830.
The Census of Agriculture was published as part of the Decennial Census, from 1840 to 1950. Beginning with 1860, it was published as a separate volume within each of the decennial censuses.
Beginning in 1925, the Census of Agriculture was taken more frequently. It was still published as part of the Decennial Census in 1930, 1940, and 1950, but was also published separately in 1925, 1935, and 1945.
After 1950, the Census of Agriculture was completely separate from the Decennial Census, and is now published every five years, in years ending in "2" and "7."
